The Importance of Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage after Liposuction

Updated: Nov 20, 2021

During liposuction the surgeon uses a cannula (a long suction tube that is moved around in the tissue) to remove the fat deposits. Unfortunately this can create ‘channels’ where fluid and swelling can occur post surgery. If this fluid and swelling is not addressed during your post-care treatment it can cause fibrosis and hardening of these areas which can cause a lumpy appearance, ruining your results.

Manual Lymphatic Massage aims to remove the fluid by gently pumping it back to the lymph vessels for the body to break down naturally. This type of massage does not require deep pressure and shouldn’t cause too much discomfort. The techniques that we use here at Detox Massage include light gliding and pumping of the fluids performed in the direction of the lymph to promote movement. Specifically, we also use the Vodd

er Method which is the most effective way to reduce swelling and bruising caused by surgery. This method is used in hospitals and clinics all over the world to treat patients with swelling, bruising and water retention.

Many good plastic surgeons are now recommending a course of Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage in their patients post-operative care plan. Not only does it help their patient receive better results it also helps to decrease pain, bruising and inflammation during the recovery period. We work very closely with a number of highly skilled plastic surgeons in the DMV region but you do not require a referral for post-surgery massage.

The sooner lymphatic massage is started post-surgery the quicker you will see results, however, we have still been able to achieve incredible results for those who are up to 6 months post surgery. For most post-liposuction patients who visit us at Detox Massage we recommend a series of 12 treatments performed 2-3 times per week for best results. Each treatment is customized to the patient's specific needs so please call us for a consultation to discuss your treatment plan.
