Inspiring Conversations with Erika Tempro of Detox Massage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Tempro.

Hi Erika, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself I am Erika Tempro, a certified lymphedema therapist and licensed massage therapist in Maryland. I have had an interesting journey in the massage industry. Generally, it is an uphill task to set up a successful massage career.

I am, however, sure that all professions will relate to my story. I studied massage therapy at Physical Therapy College in Brazil, my home country. I left Brazil about fifteen years ago for the United Kingdom, where I continued my practice. I later relocated to the United States about ten years ago, where I furthered my education to get licensed in Maryland.

Upon completing my studies, I got a job with a spa, worked there for three years before calling it quits, and opened my own massage spa business.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road? It is never easy setting up any business. Even much tasking is running a business; the various business elements involved require your utmost attention as a business owner. One of my struggles, thus, stems from the day-to-day running and management of the massage spa. As a mom of two girls, a teenager, and a baby, the time I take to run my business sometimes eats into family time.

Not being there for my kids as often as I yearn for is a compromise, I believe, I must make for my business to flourish. Another challenge I experienced as a new business owner is the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. The business was only six months old and had started to pick up when COVID-19 hit us. The lockdown and social distancing measures put in place by the government made it impossible for my spa business to thrive as I had expected. Most clients also experienced salary cuts, layoffs, and tough financial times due to the raging Coronavirus pandemic. COVID-19 led to our temporary shutdown.

Six months later, Detox Massage re-opened its door to clients, featuring new improvements tailored to offer the best services to our esteemed client. Despite the shutdown, most of our clients patiently allowed us to get back on our feet and re-establish an even bigger massage spa business catering for an even larger clientele. We do not take for granted this overwhelming support from our clients. That is why we repay this loyalty with customized therapeutic massage sessions.

As the owner of Detox Massage spa, I initially faced capital challenges to expand my business. The spa business began in a subleased space, a small space that would not allow individualized massage sessions. One year later, I acquired a new office space with four treatment rooms. These rooms will go a long way to promote our core values aligned with efficient service delivery to our rapidly growing customer base.

We’ve been impressed with Detox Massage, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others? I own a massage spa, Detox Massage, located in the North Bethesda area of Maryland. We serve clients from the larger Washington DC metro areas. Detox Massage offers lymphatic drainage massage and lymphedema massage services. Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a massage technique involving the gentle application of pressure on the lymphatic system through rhythmic hand movements to drain the lymph fluid from the body tissues. This massage technique aims at alienating health and physical conditions resulting from a clogged lymphatic system.

Detox Massage operates on principles and policies, one of them being that the client directly dictates how they need the massage customized. The clients have the right to choose the music to play in the background, the amount of pressure applied during massage sessions, and so forth. Such policies are what truly sets us apart from the other spas in Maryland.

Detox Massage specializes in Lymphatic Drainage Massage. As such, many people get automatically drawn to the notion that the spa specializes in minimizing lymphatic system conditions. However, we have seen a surge in customers seeking our services for purposes other than offsetting medical conditions. While some customers attend our massage session to relax, others come for cellulite reduction and jet-lag treatment. Detox Massage, thus, is slowly breaking barriers as far as lymphatic massage clientele notion is concerned.

Such milestones make us proud as a brand; the ability to change long-held assumptions about lymphatic drainage massage. Detox Massage runs a website and an Instagram page @detoxmassage, where persons interested in individualized lymphatic drainage massage can book sessions online at the comfort of their seats.
